Susila Dharma Canada - 2007 Annual Report for Members

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On behalf of SDC I would like to thank you for your ongoing and generous support of Susila Dharma Canada in 2007. For the second year in a row, our membership was in the nineties - 93 to be exact. Dare we try for over 100 in 2008?

This year we instituted conference calls as part of the Board's communication process, which provided us with a means to review and plan our membership and fundraising campaign. One of the outcomes of the conference calls was the development of a beautiful campaign poster, consisting of colorful pictures and descriptions of each project supported by SD Canada. We plan to have a French version of the poster completed in this coming year, and ideas are in the works for more detailed posters for each project.

The response to our fundraising campaign in October was extremely generous, with $11,000.00 over the proposed 2007 budget being raised. The proposed budget was for $27,000.00 (SD Canada Annual Report, 2006). The amount raised was $38,276.06 (SD Canada Profit and Loss Statement 2007), of which $26,380.90 was sent as project support.  Thanks to the generous support of donors, we were able to allocate extra funds to some projects as needs arose.

In addition to the projects we support, SD Canada is an active member of the international Susila Dharma Association through our support to SDIA, now based in Montreal. We are voting members in the Network, and in 2007, assisted voting members from D.R. Congo, Colombia and India to send a representative to the annual meeting in England.

SD Canada provides a grant to SDIA in recognition of the services the international office provides to us, such as project visits and information, reviewed project proposals, monitoring and evaluation reports, promotional information and images. SD Canada also facilitates donations from Canadian Subud members who want to support SDIA.

SD Canada Chair and Board hard at work!
[SD Canada Chair and Board hard at work!] I would like to make an appeal for new members to step forward and join the Susila Dharma Board and a special appeal to younger Subud members. We need your energy and your talents!

Thank you all for the wonderful experience I have had this past year as chair of the SDC Board.

With many thanks,

Atisah Moreau

Mille mercis.

Review of SD Canada Supported Projects in 2007

Anh Linh School, Vietnam

Funding provided: $2000.00

sdCanada-3.jpg
Students of Anh Linh School.
The Anh Linh Free School (sometimes called the Anh Linh Love School) is an elementary and middle school in one of the poorest sections of Ho Chi Minh City. The elementary and middle school averages 180 students per year. The nuns at the school work with children, many of whom are forced to earn their own living on the streets.  Their families cannot pay the costs of attending a Vietnamese government school, and their parents are often either in prison, involved in prostitution, gambling or selling drugs.

The teachers focus on responsible behaviour with the children and assist the parents morally and financially, providing grants to families in difficulty and loans

for small trade. In addition to educating the students, the school provides milk, snacks and lunches to those in need, medicine and medical treatment for those who are sick and school uniforms for each of the children. Anh Linh School also provides scholarships for children who go on to higher grades in state schools.

This year at the school, plans are underway to rebuild the elementary school in order to create more outdoor/recreation space for the two schools. The old primary school has been torn down and the contractor is busy laying the foundation for the new building, which will provide additional play space on the ground level, with the classrooms on the second floor. Construction is all manual but the techniques are very efficient.

Anisha Project, India

Funding Provided: $3280.00

This project is supported by SDIA and several SD Nationals: SD Germany, SD Norway, SD Holland, SD Britain, SD Austria, SD USA, SD Spain, SD France, SD Canada, SD New Zealand and also by non-Subud groups. Subud Montreal raises all of the funds for SD Canada's support to Anisha.

sdCanada-5.jpg
Children supported by the Anisha Project.
This year's major achievement at Anisha is the creation of a primary program for 3-6 year old children, in the slum area of Vandimode. Both the government and the community were able to be involved in the planning process, and the government has subsequently agreed to oversee the project, freeing Anisha money and staff for other programs.

Other programs run by Anisha are: sponsorship programs for primary class children and supplementary evening classes for school going children, giving them special attention in Hindi, science and mathematics.

Anisha also provided a child labour literacy class as a bridge to prepare children living in the project area for mainstream school.  These children, due to family poverty, work as rag pickers, coolies, hawkers, shop assistants, hotel helpers and labourers. Last year, Anisha transferred 5 children from child labour class to formal school, providing school fees, uniforms and books.

YUM Community Development Division, Indonesia

Funding provided: $4295.00

Two scholars at YUM.
YUM's Women to Women Micro-credit Program is in Central Kalimantan, an area where moneylenders are known to charge between 20%-50% in interest per month. YUM's present micro-credit program is intended to help women who manage small-scale enterprises such as home farming of crops and animals, and mini shops. The present loan manager, Lili, is a Dyak tribe member from the area. She has a B.A. in Economics and has been sent to Jakarta for training organized by one of the biggest NGO's doing micro-credit in Indonesia.

sdCanada-08_1.jpg

At present there are 4 micro-credit groups with 5 women in each. They meet with Lili and the field manager, Hari Susilo, on a monthly basis to talk about problems, receive training and make reimbursement for their loans (at 9% per annum beginning in the third month after receiving the loan).  YUM plans to substantially increase the number of women in the program in 2008.

SD Canada also supported YUM's Scholarship Program ($647.00)

Tierraviva Project, Argentina

Funding provided: $1150.00

sdCanada-09.jpg
Painting by an incarcerated mother, welcoming her child back from pre-school.
SDI sent Paloma de la Vina to review this project at the request of the Argentina National Committee. Paloma concluded that Rasjid's work is essential in helping to improve the conditions and self-esteem of incarcerated mothers in the prison, and that SDIA should offer support in the area of administration and financial management. This past year, two of the mothers were given a three-month training program in facilitating a preventative psychosocial program for the mothers inside the prison. They began conducting workshops in April of 2007, with the goal of each mother leaving prison "strengthened, believing in her own capacity to communicate with others and her ability to be useful to others."

The SD Canada Board feels that it is important to continue support for this project in 2008, fulfilling the second year of our two-year commitment.

Abandoned Babies Project, Romania

Funding provided: $2000.00

sdCanada-10.jpg
Care workers with the orphans at the Children’s Hospital.
This project continues to touch everyone's heart. The report sent to SDC in July 2007 talks about the relationships formed between the women who come into the hospital and the babies they care for.  The babies love being cuddled and talked to and respond with smiles. The work is for the most part, one on one, as many of the babies have physical problems such as trouble breathing, blindness, kidney disease, Down's syndrome and inoperable hydrocephalous. The orphaned children benefit greatly from the much-needed care, and the women find it very rewarding to care for them.

Cuban Projects

Funding provided: $5024.00

sdCanada-11.jpg
Lahana Doucet's visit to Cuba.
Lahana Doucet was able to make a short visit to the Cerro Subud Group in Havana March 8-10, 2008. The following project reports are taken from Lahana's report on this visit:

Lahana Doucet's visit to Cuba: Municipality Project: Part of the SD Canada money goes to the municipality to help several schools, improving the well being of everyone involved. Examples given are a fridge so that lunch and snack food can be kept cool and a fence protecting the school wall.

Project in Camaguey: This is an orphanage of ten to fifteen young people, aged 10-22 years old. A Subud member is in charge and other Subud people come to help clean, work in the kitchen, prepare activities and provide other assistance. SD funding assists in providing clothes, soaps and other necessities for the orphans.

Project in Manzanillo: Subud members volunteer with seniors who live in part of a big house and provide them with vitamins, medicine and other small things they need.

In addition to SD Canada's commitment, we sent donations for Cuban projects on behalf of SD Britain.

Amanecer Semillitas and ICDP, Colombia

Funding provided: $3000.00

sdCanada-12.jpg
In July 2007, Virginia Thomas, Executive Director of SDI, recommended to SDC that the Canadian budget for Colombia go 100% to the Amanecer project, rather than being divided between Semillitas and ICDP, as was previously done. The Semillitas project uses ICDP methodology and both projects are managed by the same person.

In February of 2007, Virginia visited SDI projects in Columbia, returning with information about the project supported by SD Canada.

Last year the Semillitas pre-school program and the Colegio, at the request of their mothers, began accepting children from Embera Chami, the poorest indigenous community in the region. Everything is going well and the children are eager to learn. More Embari Chami children could be accommodated and more programs for their families developed with more funding.

Child's Garden of Peace, Brazil

Funding provided: $2360.00

sdCanada-13.jpg
Illene Pevec and students of the Garden.
This children's environmental education program has now branched out into two additional programs: a scholarship program to help students reach access higher education, and a women's micro-enterprise where women make and sell purses made from re-used soft drink tabs.  Illene Pevec established the program in 2001, and she is still very much involved in its operation today. Funding is provided each year by one donor, using SD Canada as the venue to transfer the funds.

Mid Year Requests:

SD Canada has an unallocated grant fund to cover unexpected requests that come up during the year. Two were allocated in 2007:

Lemba Imbu School, D.R. Congo

Funding provided: $1500.00

sdCanada-14.jpg
Teachers in Lemba Imbu.
Thanks to coordination by SDIA, SD Canada assisted part way though the year with an unexpected request from Lemba Imbu School in D.R. Congo to help with teachers' salaries.

YUM KUU Learning Center, Indonesia

Funding provided: $1125.00

We also provided one-time assistance for the children's food supplements at the KUU Learning Center in Java.

SD CANADA in Canada

sdCanada-15-16_1.jpg
Elfrida Schragen and one of her portraits.
Many activities go on in Canada as personal interest and volunteer activities. Most of you will have seen Elfrida Schragen's project of painting portraits of homeless people in Victoria BC on the website www.subudcanada.ca. The portraits are sold by a committee that supports her work, and the proceeds of $700 a painting go to an agency that supports the homeless. This project has raised about $20,000 towards building the new 'Our Place' homeless shelter and support service in Victoria BC.

Other activities, less organized, but having the Susila Dharma spirit, include picking up elderly people to drive them to latihan or other places and enabling them to continue gardening by doing the digging and other heavy work for them.

SD Canada would be interested in hearing from anyone who is involved in giving support to others in any way!
