SDIA engages in projects to research and analyse development issues in order to assist its members and others to improve practice.
2007-2008: The Governance and Development Project was a joint initiative of the WSA Forum and SDIA and funded by the Guerrand Hermes Foundation for Peace. It surveyed nine members of SDIA active at the local level to understand better how each influenced governance to enhance their results.

To make progress towards poverty reduction and sustainable
development we must understand how local, regional and
international decision-making serve the people. The Governance and Development project explored grassroots
development initiatives and how they can generate more inclusive and
participatory decision-making processes as well as governance structures and
mechanisms.
