United Nations

In 1989 SDIA became an international non-governmental organization (NGO) in Special Consultative Status with UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC ) and UNICEF and more recently also Department of Public Information (DPI).  This recognition permits SDIA to send representatives to international NGO meetings organized by ECOSOC and other UN agencies.  SDIA is active in meetings related to Human Rights, Social Development, the Millennium Development Goals and the Council of NGOs in Consultative Status (CONGO).  You can find reports by representatives who have attended UN related meetings on behalf of SDIA in this section of the library.

The UN Human Rights Council held its fifth session in Geneva from 11th to 18th June 2007 and has successfully survived its year of transformation and institution building, but not without pains. Only a few thematic reports were presented, amongst which the Right to Food. The UN Special Rapporteur on Food will be one of the speakers at the Forum in Geneva later this month which two SD people will attend.

2008 - Social Enterprise: A New Model for Poverty Reduction and Employment Generation

Initiatives in post-communist states often focus on bolstering the private sector or the state, ignoring organizations that combine for-profit activities with social aims. This report suggests ways to promote social enterprises, to make the legal and political environments more favourable, to support social enterprises, and to provide ‘seed money’ and small grants to sustain social enterprise.

From June 14-15, 2010, Myra Margolin attended the Informal, Interactive Hearings of the General Assembly with Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the Private Sector at the UN Headquarters in New York. There NGOs, CSOs and members of the private sector provided input into the planning process for the upcoming high-level plenary meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (also called the MDG Summit) that will occur this September.

Ban Ki-moon briefs NGOs on his vision for his next term

Ban Ki-moon focused heavily on the importance of disarmament, assisting countries in transition, and the power of partnership. The Secretary General stressed the significance of a healthy civil society in the success of a country’s development. He called for the NGOs to help women’s groups, social media activists and others fulfill their roles as nations move forward and develop.
